LG Energy Solution plans to set up an R&D base in Germany within this year to accelerate the development of all-solid-state batteries, a company official said at a seminar in Seoul on April 13.
Kim Je-young, an executive vice president of LG Energy Solution, said at the Next Generation Battery Seminar (NGBS) 2022 at COEX in Seoul that the company is looking to advance its schedule for mass production of all-solid-state batteries.

The company aims to commercialize polymer-based all-solid-state batteries by 2026 and sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries, which require more advanced technology compared to polymer-based batteries, by 2030.

All-solid-state batteries are characterized by higher energy density and lower fire risk compared to lithium-ion batteries. They use solid electrolytes between the battery’s positive and negative electrodes.

All-solid-state batteries are largely divided into three types -- polymer-based, oxide-based, and sulfide-based. Although polymer-based batteries are relatively inexpensive and can be made through a relatively easier process, they have low ionic conductivity. Although sulfide-based batteries offer high efficiency, they have low price competitiveness.

Kim said that LG Energy Solution is collaborating with Korean and global researchers through open innovation to expedite mass production of all-solid-state batteries.
Last year, LG Energy Solution drew much attention by announcing that it has developed a long-life all-solid-state battery that can be charged at a high speed even at room temperature (25℃). This battery can be charged and discharged up to 500 times at room temperature.
